Chimera (KI-meer-ah)

To give the definition of what a Chimera is, is only a pale visage of what Chimera really are.

Chimera, both animate and inanimate, like Changelings are creatures and things, that are born of dream. However unlike Changelings, they lack the protection of mortal flesh. Without this protection, they can dissipate into nothingness almost right after they have been created.

Other similarities to Changelings include the ability to use arts and realms, however Chimera have extra bonus powers called Redes. Redes are nearly endless numbers of different powers that Chimera display. These can be anything from vanishing from sight, healing, flying, breathing fire, anything. However many Chimera also have a form of Frailties known as Banes. Anything from having to play riddle games, to singing a song that includes the Chimera's true name, like the many powers displayed, are generally unique to the being in question.

More information on Chimera and different kinds of Chimera can be found in the Core Books for Changeling: The Dreaming and almost every other changeling book.

Now while there are as many chimera as one can imagine, Kithain, particularly Nockers, (as they are the ones that work the Most with Chimera, both animate and inanimate) have found that there are four general type of Chimera based on how they have formed.

Incidental Chimera

Are brought about through minor daydreams and fantasies. These chimera are flimsy and fragile like soap bubbles at best.

Dreamed Chimera

Are much sturdier and tend to come about by the act of a changeling undergoing chrysalis. These chimera still may not stand up to the abuses of every day banality.

Crafted Chimera

Are Chimera that have been formed using traditional means of crafting handiwork and the Changelings own personal glamours. These Chimera tend to be able to stand up to more abuse.

Forged Chimera

Only Nockers, Boggans, and some Eshu, have enough skill needed to bring on the Art of Infusion. This Art, an act of pure creation in of itself, is what helps bring about Forged Chimera. Only Nockers (and a few members of the Sidhe House Dougal) are allowed to practice this Art. Chimera brought about in this manner are the most resilient of chimerical things.

More information on these four chimera and the Art of Infusion can be found in the Kith Book Nockers for Changeling: The Dreaming.

Banal Chimera

While most Chimera tend to be helpful, there are also dangerous forms of Chimera. One of these that is even more dangerous than most is what is called a Banal Chimera. A living paradox, Banal Chimera are very dangerous indeed. Possessing both Glamour and Banality, they go about wrecking terror and putting all Kithain they come into contact in danger.

Banal Chimera can come about in many ways, just as any other Chimera. From broken oaths, to fears and doubts of Kithian themselves. They however need glamour to survive, for their own banality will eventually undo them.

More information on Banal Chimera can be found in Autumn People for Changeling: The Dreaming.
